As earlier predicted, the High Court of Australia this morning handed down their judgement granting leave for the lawyers for Cardinal George Pell to appeal his conviction.
One area that the appeal may address is whether the trial judge directed the jury on the inferences they may draw from the evidence in favour of Cardinal Pell. The appeal lawyers’ basic contention is that the jury “got it wrong.”
The dissenting judgement of Justice Mark Weinberg in the Supreme Court of Appeal in Victoria will no doubt provide some impetus in developing the appeal from hereon.
